So in the last month and a half, I've lost 2 of my 3 flowerhorns... :'( And just yesterday I get home from work and go to clean my tanks, walk into the next room where all my python cleaner stuff is, and find my 19" silver arowana dried up on the floor Apparantly somehow he managed to open the glass lid and jump out while I was working and flopped his way over there

This greatly saddens me, becuase he was my favoirte fish, even more amusing to me then the 2 flowerhorns that I had lost :'( I now have to decide whethter to buy another Aro... or try something new... My poor aro...

I've wanted many neat things over the times... now I guess I have to contemplate what next... another aro... maybe a delhezi or ornate bichir.... a cool breeding pair of semi affordable fish of some kind... I dunno... I dont want to spend over 100 really though, cuz I cannot afford it... what to do guys?!

:( Sorry to hear about your loss. Yeah aro's are strong buggers and jumps out easily, I know this too from experience with a jardini years ago.

Well if you love the aro's, start with another one. It'll make the loss a lot more bearable. Also from your experience with the first aro as a learning one, on how to prevent as much as possible the possiblity of him/her jumping out again.

I used to use small bags of sand/rock to cover the top of the tank lid after my first aro death, and never had it happen again.

Seems like so many arowanas leap to their death that there should have a standard weight recomendation for lids to keep them. Reading over the posts here, I'm guessing this is how most arowanas die in captivity. I doubt anyone here is stupid enough to keep them without lids so I assume most people didn't have enough weight on the lid.

If that happened to me, I'd move on to new fish. The excitement of new fish helps ease the pain of losing prized fishies.

i'd get another aro. there is no fish in the hobby like silver arowanas. best part about silvers is there always growing so they never get boring to keep. every day you see them, its bigger then the day b4. which is why i can never have enough of them. every six months to a year i buy another 2" aro and will continue to do so til my future aro pond is fullfiled.

yeah this is true.. my aro was really unique... actually he had some different barbels... almost like bulls horns... heres si about a 4 month old picture of him...

i would have to say those oscars would be the answer to the death of ur aro... aro's are so skittish as it is, puttin them with others such as oscars is askin for it. oscars try to act all strong n tough because there too afraid in actuality. act tuff but fake the funk. im guessing when you were not around they were freakin out ur aro causin him to do what he does best, "dart" off to get away but did it at an angle. if they were chasing him still while he's doin this he would continue to do so til he gets away or til he feels safe, in your case he did, but ended up on the floor :(

even my aros still do this and there huge. friendly tankmates or solo is best for aros. plan ahead on ur next one if u plan to keep it a long time. put it only with lil nice guys who can become food with no cares or keep it alone.

wow they are bull horns very cool and i am very sorry for your loss

I dunno about the oscar, I have never seen it fight with any of my fish at all... the only fish I could maybe thinik that woudl scare it is my bluegill... but generally even the bluegill is pretty docile these days... I just know it makes me sad...

Anyone know the average price/ availability of black aros?

Sorry to hear.

I lost my 2 favorite fish not so long ago as well.
