After seeing many filter ideas,an idea popped into my head...i dont know whether this idea has used been used earlier but this idea now iam sharing is not copied from anywhere:)

I have uploaded the image of the filter..It basically consists of 3 PVC large diameter pipes..i want ur opinion whether it will work or not..
the length of 2 inside pipes is 20 cm and
outside biggest pipe length is 25 cm..
the arrow marks are holes in the pipes through which water flows out..
the pump i wanted use is the pump of power head filter..
i want ur opinion:) and dont laugh:D..this is my first DIY idea.

This is kept above the tank..i know it looks bad but there is no problem with siphon and pretty cheap except for pump and i am planning to use powerhead filter as pump

KALYAN,

I would introduce the water in from the top, in your design right now the water wont pass threw the gravel. I did a sketch of what i mean.

Also if you pump up to the top, gravity will help push the water threw the filter where your trying to pump threw the filter media.

That's just my 2 cents. i like the idea it looks really easy to clean and maintain... If you wanted to get a bigger pump you can use this design as an actually under tank canister filter, or as an additional pre-filter or post-filter polishing pad =]

KALYAN,

But the pipe opens in the inner pipe at the top...the whole red line is the pipe which opens at the top then flows through gravel and comes out through the holes in the inner pipe to the middle pipe which has sponge and wen water rises,it comes to outer pipe and then to tank

but i thought abt that after some time..that it is better to pump water from the top..and gravity do the rest...

this whole setup has to be kept above the tank becoz gravity helps to return the water...so it wont look good(major setback)
but meanwhile u dont hav to make overflow box and syphon adjustments which i think is an advantage..

btw.. the one i was referring to was a simple box with different layers for different materials.

The one you intend to make seems a bit complicated to maintain. How do you plan to suspend the internal pipes.

at the base of outermost pipe i will glue 1inch pvc to hold the middle pipe..and middle and inner piper are of same length..the middle pipe will be stuffed in sponge or wool which will keep the inner pipe in place...and the water comes from top..and goes out by hole in the outer pipe in the base..i already made them..will upload the pic soon...

Have you considered how you wold maintain the filter, and if need be, change media?

i successfully created one now..everything is just tight fitting..no gum used...all air tight and detachable..works like wonder..just hav to keep it over tank hood and pump water...

for maintainance-3 tubes...one gravel,one sponge and 1 scrubber(instead of bioballs)..they are easy to detach and clean..and re-fit again...

i will upload some photos later
