sorry if this is in the wrong forum, my plan is to take out all the gravel of my existing tank, even with alot of gravel cleaning and over filtration, the gravel is etting filthy constantly, so i want to take out all of that gravel and make my tank a bare bottomed, its over filtered, but would this then make the tank have any nititre or ammonia spikes at all? thanks for your time. :nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly:

I think it depends. Ive heard of people taking out their gravel who were running sumps or HOB's and they had ammonia spikes after removing the gravel anyway. Theres another thread somewhere where some guy lost a bunch of dats because he took out all his gravel at once. BB will spread evenly across all the possible surface area, including your gravel, so although it doesnt have a great surface area and it is completely submerged, it does house some BB and removing it could be a bad idea. I would remove a little at a time over like a two or three week period. Not that big of a pain in the A, and also less risk of any problems.

I'd take it out in stages.
Bear in mind tho that all that crap will then fill your filters up quick so you'll need to pull your filters a bit more often. :)

i agree do not take out all at once! i did this once and man did i have a amonino spike :( good luck

thanks for your suggestions, im going to wait till i finished university before i partake on any gravel changes, i go back in april, and ill be back in june. ill let you know how things get on! thanks all for info :)

well i did take it all out and you can see in my new thread that it all went well i placed enough carbon and zeolite in my new external filter to X4 the filtration of the volume of my take :) itsall good now
