Had it for a few months (it's the pond version) and I smelt the contents in the bottle and it reeks! Must be the live bacteria. Is it normal? I've never contaminated it, and I didn't smell it when I bought it so I don't know if it's normal. Does it go off?

It's a water conditioner from Interpet.

i'll tell you right now, it's not live bacteria. could be dead bacteria though. . .

more likely, it uses a chemical called hydrogen sulfite or sulfide. smells like rotten eggs. it's normal.

Doesn't say it contains bacteria. My bottle of Prime smells like sulfur too. I prefer Prime to anything else.

Actually, you shouldn't be using/needing Amquell. Your ammonia should be 0 at all times, if properly cycled & you don't want to remove the ammonia necessary to support the bacteria that support your fish's bioload.

It works fine as a dechlor. Its not going to harm anything.

Read the bottle of prime, it will also say removes chlorine, ammonia, nitrate etc.

Actually it changes ammonia to a non-toxic, but usable form. Good to use even when cycling a tank. You couldn't use Amquell during cycling.

Except that it doesn't remove ammonia
