Hi everyone, my name is Jeremy and I live in Rockford, IL.
I just started my 60g CA/SA tank (I do have one adult Jewel cichlid in there until I move him to a diff tank.) I started a video journal to track the growth of them. I have:
MALE JEWEL CICHLID (Hemichromis bimaculatus)
MALE GREEN TERROR (Aequidens rivulatus)
FEMALE JACK DEMPSEY (Rocio octofasciata) just added a suitable male today (bring on the babies!)
1 MALE and 2 FEMALE Nicaraguense (Hypsophrys nicaraguensis)
here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJsoCO5V09c, you can click on watch in high quality and it looks a little better, These guys are all fairly young except for the Jewel. I don't use a substrate in this tank just for personal preference. I have 2 H.O.T. Magnums, Penguin 350 Biowheel, Fluval 3+ and a Aquaclear 110 I turn on from time to time to get the current going to sweep up the poop into the filters (I like a clean tank) It is on in the video so the bubbles are goin a little crazy. I took out the ugly plastic fake wood today too and made another rock cave. I get my rocks from a landscaping place and paid a total of nine bucks for over 60 lbs of rock. I'm very open to any advice and constructive criticism. I look forward to being a part of this forum.:headbang2

Welcome to MFK!Nice looking setup.Only thing I'd do is put some dark fine gravel or maybe black sand for substrate.

Welcome to MFK

I agree with fishluvr that you need substrate but it's your personal preference as mentioned. And jewels are Africans btw.

I must say that black sand would look pretty bad ass in there, I may have to think about it. I know the jewel is african, that's why I put in () that he was there until I move him. He just happened to be there first then I bought all the ca/sa, I'm getting a new tank ready for him now in my kids room. Thanks for the welcome and suggestions.

Pool filter sand is cheap and great for aquariums. For a 60 gallon tank you are less than $10. That's what I have in my tanks.

wow thanks for the 3m colorquartz tip. I was checking out what it was and the S Grade looks pretty close to sand.

S grade is a little small, if you get the t-grade (bigger) it doesn't go up the siphon tube as much when cleaning the tank. S-grade also tends to trap more gas bubbles under the surface. Thwittle is right pool filter sand is awesome, probably the best substrate you can have for a aquarium and its cheap. 30-50lbs for $10 in most places. The only problem with it is you don't have the color option. It looks really natural though.
