My Jags are terrible parents. First they allowed a Green severum to steal eggs from them. After the remaining eggs got to the wriggler stage, the Jags came up to the top of the tank for food when I walked in the room and the Severum swam in and ate the wrigglers! Will they get better as parents? They are both about 11" and have had several spawns. I left the Severum in the tank hoping that would bring out the protective instinct in my Jags. Maybe the wrong move?

It's hard to get mad at them because they are so much fun to watch. They always greet me at the front of the tank and are very gentle with each other. The female likes to nudge the male with her mouth to get his attention. I don't usually name my fish but might have to name them Marge and Homer because they kind of forget about their kids all the time!!

What size tank are they in? What does their spawning area look like? Is it a pot or a rock or something else?

wow.... it so weird the jag always been aggressive even to their owner even whem he just do the normal moves he done every day b4 the spawn -even they can fight with the aeration lines when the fry or the water flow move it in a new place -don-kichot moves :D -

the 1st thing got in my mind when i read ur post i thought the pair are young and that was one of their 1st spawn but 11" they must done it several times b4

They are in a 110gal tank. I have a couple of flat rocks and drift wood in the tank. They spawned in the corner on the driftwood as well as the flat rock near by. The area should be easy to defend. At times the Jags were very focused on defending the area and other times not.

That sucks! I had the same thing happen with my freddies. I had a couple juvenile nicaraguensis in with them and they ate all the eggs in about fifteen minutes. I ran to get my camera to take pics of the new freddy batch and by the time I got back half the eggs were eaten. Urgh.
