Well i got a pair of jewel cichlids from my lfs and they already bred after just 5 days of being introduced to my tank. It was reallly unexpected that they would breed so soon so im not really prepared. How long until the eggs hatch and how long until i have to feed them once the egg sac is gone? I dont have any bbs so would crushed up flakes into a powder be okay or hikar first bites?

2-3 days to hatch, you could try hikari bites, but the only thing that they will eat guaranteed is bbs, and you will want to feed the fry 4-6 times a day for the first few weeks

You still have time to get bs eggs and hatch them as the fry wont need to eat for a while. That would be your best bet.

they will be eggs for about 3 days... then they will be wigglers (egg yolk attached) for another 3 days...

You can pick up a packet of Brine Shrimp Eggs at a local store and get them going...

You can order Bribe Shrimp in bulk online much much cheaper... you can also buy decapsulated Brine Shrimp online which remove the hassle of hatching them at home. This is what I use...

Or you could use something like "First Bites" or some other manufactured fry food...

Or you could try crushed flakes, although I've never had luck using crushed flakes for new born fry.

I try to keep plants in my fry tanks which helps with water quality (removes nitrates) and I always see fry picking at the plants. I'm not sure what they are eating off the plants, but they definitely eat something off the plants (possibly bugs, possibly microrganisms, possibly the plants themselves, who cares :P they eat it!)

if you use frozen bbs youll get lots of survivers and even more with live. however if u use hikari first bites you may not get as much

:swear: They ate all the wigglers this morning before school i could see some wigglers and now they are gone including the eggs. Is this normal to eat their own young? Should i just give them some time to get it right? And how much longer til they spawn again?

It is normal for new parents to goof up their first couple of tries... they will get better each time around...

It will take the female 2~3 weeks to develop eggs. So if all conditions are right she will be laying eggs in 3~4 weeks...

So my jewels bred again yesterday and there were alot of eggs on the ceramic plate but today when i went to check about 75% were gone. Should i take out the pair now to stop them from eating the eggs? Or let them be? The eggs look fertile to me too b/c i can see a small black dot in them
