So after flirting and digging and scouting for two weeks, my 13 month old orangeheads laid eggs today.

They've gotten kind of beat up defending them - there are two adult male orangeheads and 5 older Leucosticta in the tank - but so far nobody has gotten near them. The lights just went out so we'll see if they can keep the ghost knife and pleco away overnight.

My adults have never had a successful spawn yet, so I'm not all that optimistic about these ones - it would make sense if they failed a few times while learning - but then again, the last ones had a tank full of loaches in the way, while this tank has just the one BN pleco and two pictus cats.

They ignored all the nice round rocks and picked the one leftover piece of slate from before I swapped the decor, way back in the back of the tank. I had to take pics from behind the tank.

Here are the hopeful parents defending their area. It's also the first shots I've gotten that start to show how red three of my satanoperca are in their fins. In the third shot you can see the male going up after the dominant adult male. I imagine this is how he got his face all beat up.
