I'm thinking about moving my BGK over to the poly tank. Maybe putting his pvc caves (or at least his slate rocks) infront of or to the side of the rocks in there now, leaning the slate on the front of the glass similar to Liz's (Red Devil) slate rock in her BGK tank.

My reasoning is, I have wanted to get one fish, preferably some kind of cichlid, to put in either my 40, or the 55. Originally I was going to try to put one in the 55 with the polys, but I thought it may be more practical to move an already 6.5" BGK to a tank of similar sized fish (I measured last night, the biggest sen is now pushing 5.5"). This would free up some space in my 40 Breeder, a good amount actually... With his "caves" gone, there's probably about 18 square inches of space free.

BGKs grow slow, so it really won't put too much pressure on me to upgrade (no more than say, my Lap)...

Does this sound crazy? I'm still not decided, so let me know what you think.

I did post something almost identical in the Media Lounge in my Phase 3: Part II thread, but it didn't get any responses, and I doubt people even saw it. ;)

eventually a bgk will get as long as a 55 gallon is wide

idk if a bgk would like a bare tank like yours is as they can be pretty shy, but he may already be in a bare tank (don't know your tanks lol)

they are compatible though... as long as the lap can't eat it I don't see it being bothered

My BGK was in with two senegals without any real issues. Now has eels for roommates and still no real problems. The knife no longer hides in a cave but leans into a sword plant most of the time. Only issue is at feeding or if someone goes into his corner.

Most likely, yes... It will take at least another year.... IME.

Well, he's had a semi-bare tank before... My 40B used to have the middle completely bare with sand and rocks around it (like an underwater lagoon).

The tank he's in now is planted, lightly, with sand and pebbles as the substrate.

I don't think it would be a big deal for him in a bare-bottom tank, really. I think the biggest thing is him finding a hiding spot he feels comfortable in.

Still, this is all discussion, and my mind isn't made up yet. :)

I would move it, then maybe upgrade the tank later. As long as you give it plenty of hiding spots, it will be okay.

oh yeah it would take a while. They are pretty slow growing

Yeah... I ppicked mine up almost exactly one year ago @ 1.5". He grew almost exactly 5" in that time. I've heard around the 6-7" mark they start to slow down quite a bit, which is what I am witnessing now... He doesn't look like he's grown much at all in a month or two.

LOL... He's in the bucket...

I have ADD... Instant gratification and all that good stuff...

:grinno:

And... he's in...

He's a bit confused, as expected, but I have a hiding spot all set for him to find (edit: He found it and loves it)

Right now he's just kind of hovering in the middle of the tank.

updates tomorrow hopefully. Hopefully it works out well too. :)
