I recently got a 120g 4'x2' off of craigslist. It came with a scratch-free AGA tank, glass top, double lightstrip, fluval 404, and stand -- all for $300. I sanded and polyurethaned the stand so it looks good as new. I used 100 lbs 3m colorquartz "buff" as a substrate; this is my first attempt with sand and I really like it.

currently my stock list is:
1x satanoperca leucosticta
1x gymnogeophagus (possibly labiatus??)
1x geophagus brasiliensis
2x aequidens latifrons
5x metynnis schreitmulleri

the acaras are very happy and are allready guarding fry. I'm not sure if the brasiliensis will work out because he is a little bossy and i've been reading that they get more aggressive. I can always move him to a 55 with some angels or put him in his own tank.

so what else can I add? I was considering vieja synspilum or Heros sp. 'rotkeil'.

Awesome - you made a good buy there! Nice acara fry too! I'm surprised the geo is agro...

Good looking tank - unfortunately those brasiliensis are a bit mis-represented when they're listed as Geophagus, as their temprement is closer to that of a Central American cichlid. By comparison to the more peaceful cousins they're highly aggro, I would move him into another tank or keep a very close eye.

Awesome pick-up...

i really like that substrate you got there - do they have darker colors?
where did you get that and would you mind sharing how much it costs?

you should definitely try and get schools of the satanopercas

the substrate is 3m colorquartz. it comes in 2 sizes and about 15 colors from black to gray to plum. it is used in swimming pools mixed in with the plaster. totally inert and the "buff" color i got rinsed clean after a couple washes in the bucket. you can find a list of distributors at http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/ColorQuartz/HomePage/Products/Buy/

it was about $25 for a 50 lb. bag and i bought 100 lbs.

also there is a good thread on the product here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=43290

i really like the satanoperca school idea. i would have to remove the brasilenises first. would 3 be good? 5?

sweet pick-up, man! looking good.

Vurra vurra nice!!
