I learn't my lesson recently. This is to never ever pick up a Clarius Cat fish with your hands. The blooming thing spiked me with one of its fins and my finger swelled up to nearly twice it's size, thankfully I wasn't wearing a ring. The other lesson I learnt at the same time is to never answer a corded telephone whilst filling your tank with the hose. (Before anyone shoots me down on this comment, I have been doing this for 3 years without problems, I attach it to the sink in the kitchen which is a mixer tap so am able to get hot and cold running through and have never had a problem) Did this to answer a call from the NHS Direct helpline about swollen finger and whilst on phone tank overflowed leaving me with a massive puddle on my carpet. :duh:

You could pick up cats, just gotta know how to grab them.

I got hit by a bristle nose pleco...never would of thought his bristles would be hard...haha

I panicked because the clarius had jumped out of the bucket I was storing it in at the time, so I ran over and picked it up, got my hand too close to it's fin and got spiked. Don't know why I panicked though because these fish in the wild live more in water holes and when the water hole dries up it crawls on land to find the next water source so is obviously capable of living out of the tank for quite a long time.

Yeah the thing was that I didn't know that these fish did that. I know now and take alot more precautions before cleaning out the tank like having a bucket with a lid on to stop him/her from jumping out in the first place.

it could be worse. Clarias are poisonous. Take care.

Lets put it this way, I wouldn't do it again. For anyone who does get stung by a clarias then the advice I was given by NHS was not to rinse the wound under cold water but to wash it in very hot water as hot as you can possibly bear. This advice worked a treat and the swelling and pain was reduced 10 fold after following the advice given.

I heard thats the thing for poisonous stings. The heat breaks down the toxins faster.

Here is another lesson

Learn't is not a word

Learned. :)
