When he told me, I just asked him who could house a seven-foot (?) fish. He didn't have an answer, so I hope he changes his mind. My blood froze a little right then, though.

I doubt if many members here would question this storekeeper about who could keep the fish that he is able to bring in to sell..Is it a good or bad thing that your blood almost went cold?

It's just such a big fish. I'd place a pretty good bet that it will be dead within three years. Somebody with good intentions will buy it and never get around to upgrading the tank, you know? I would certainly expect an educated sale, though. They don't sell pacus for that reason. Too big. I guess, to me, it seems like a pretty wonky investment for the fish store to make.

Blood cold in fear of the poor fish's fate.

I have to make a statement friend

If you gonna make that bet be prepared to lose it.

Perhaps you should ask the owner why they are bringing in this fish before you make preemptive judgements.

Personally people made that judgement on me about some of my fish choices yet here I sit 8 months later with a few tanks 180g -300g and an order for a 500g just gone in.

there are lots of us who can house a monster like that. I'm planning an above ground pool for some monster cats as soon as they grow out.

This IS MONSTER FISH KEEPERS NOT MINIATURE FISH KEEPERS. We all understand size requirements and many of us when we get a fish will take care of it.

I appreciate your concern for these fish but there are plenty of catfish enthusiasts who can support the tankbusters that they keep. Before I joined here I thought that I was hot stuff with my one fiftys and one eighties but people have huge indoor ponds, massive tanks and some even modify their homes in order to be able to have their dream tank. You are not new here so you should know better.

Oh yeah. I know it might work out fine. I also see redtail catfish in 125g tanks all the time. There just aren't very many monster tanks in the world. Being on this forum gives a pleasant view of properly cared for fish in wonderfully large tanks. I enjoy that idea very much. But in reality, I still hear the word 'Oscar' in the same sentence as 'forty gallons' too often.
But with a good long list of "if"s, the fish will be fine for life. It's just that we see those "if"s satisfied so often in this forum that it's hard to remember how many people just buy fish, throw them in their tanks and see who lives. *kicks a rock* But I do trust the guys at this LFS. They really do grasp fishkeeping, and make every effort to sell good fish to the right people. Still, the odds of that fish living a long life seem slim statistically.

But yarelli is not an rtc, appart from the fact i doubt its ability too excede 3ft in captivity someone is not going too buy yarelli for what will be a far greater price than what you pay for juvie rtc. The reason rtc are a problem is due to the fact that they are commonly seen and are very cute when small, yarelli is not cute and far less likely too be purchased by an amateur.

Good point. I'm resting easier on that sentiment. I suppose a casual buyer wouldn't be too interested. Thanks.

I'd have to agree. A casual buyer is not going to plop down even $50 or more for a fish. The ones to worry about are the RTC's, pacu's and common pleco's and the occasional senegal bichir.
