So about 3 months a go I purchased 2 marble crays. shipping was a bit expensive so I checked out the rest of the vendors stock and decided on some cherry shrimp. The vendor said he had enough room for a small bag of 10 shrimp and the two marbles. After 2 days the packaged arrived and I had originally planned on putting them all in my 37 gallon planted tank but I got a little over vellous and had purchased a group of ten long fin albino bushy nose pleco juvies. Well not thinking I put them all together along with 3 3" discus and a few other friends. As you can all imagine LF plecs and crays don't mix especially in a tank that size. One day I come home from work to see a LF bushy nose flying around the tank with a cray attached
Long story short, I flipped as I prefer the plecs over crays. I pulled out a ten gallon tank i had in the garage and set it up asap, jump started it with some media from one of my other gazzillion tanks and bam threw the crays in to give my LF bushys a break.
After a bit of time I got a bit concerned about the cherrys. I almost never saw em and thought that they were disappearing slowly. So my 37 needed some cleaning and I decided to pull as many of the cherrys that I could find. It had been about a month since I got e and only managed to find 6. I took those 6 and threw them in with the crays.
By now, I am sure all you invert people are shaking your heads
and I'm sure you guessed it but I am by no means a invert expert and I mainly focus on frontosa and planted tanks. I picked these guys up to try something new and ad a different aspect to my 37 gal.
Well after a week or so all the cherrys were amazing still alive. The crays seemed to leave em well enough alone in the lil ten gallon. Upon closer inspection I realized that 4 of the 6 cherrys were berried. Afraid of the crays eating the lil cherrys I pulled another (my last) ten gallon tank out of the garage and jump started another set up. By the time it was ready to go one of the females had already released her young and I could see a few swimming around. I took all 6 cherrys and placed em in the other 10 g to improve the survival rate (the babies i left with the crays as they were too hard to catch)
Now it has been two more months and my cherry tank is full of babies, juvies, and the 6 adults. I can't wait till the lil ones get big enough to sell
Now my cray tank, last week I noticed one of the crays carrying what looked to be my black gravel on her under side. Her tail was curled up and she was definitely holding something (eggs of coarse) Now there are lil marble crays all over the tank and she still has even more eggs on her underside still
I don't know much about raising marble or cherry fry but plan on doing some more research. Hopefully my good luck will keep coming.
Any advice you have on rearing the young would be greatly appreciated and I'll continue to update this thread as well.
I have a few pictures but none of the little ones as I don't have a camera that is good enough to get a nice shot but I'm looking at getting a camera asap
also once the cray has dropped the rest of her young I'm going to put the adults back into the 37 Gal (which is now empty because I moved all the other fish to my 120
)
Thanks for your time and sorry for the lengthy-ness of this thread. I just had to share it with someone
