I've been planning a hatchery for a while now. I'm getting going to start small with a few of the smaller cichlids. Right now I have 15 cutteri fry. Half are in a 29 and half in a 15. I want to know how many tanks will I need to have. I'm getting a pair of calico convicts and a male blond hrp and female calico convict. I would like to add cryptoheros chetumalensis to the list also. I know all these can live in a 29 comfortably but I would to use 40 breeders to eliminate fry grow outs as much as possible. I was thinking 6 tanks would be good. Would this be a good set up ?

are you doing anything in your big tank(the 110 long)? I think i heard you were breeding festes but i am not shore... i would do a bunch of 10 gallons for separating parents and for putting fry in and breeder tanks if possobile beacause you can fit larger fish in better footprints and less aggression...

It depends on how you plan on selling off / distributing subsequent fry. When you have pairs breeding, you will have batches of fry every few weeks - so it all depends on how many fry you want to actually raise.

In other words - if you try to save as many fry as possible, then you will need to find a place for approx 100 fry every month, from each breeding pair. (That number allows for natural dieoff / deaths / eaten fry.)

No I never get the tank. My brother law flaked out on going to get it so I got a 75 instead. That tank staying my display. But I might throw a pair in there. I rather go with no less then 29 being I do want the pair to grow full size witch is why I wanted the 40bs

I plan on selling on aquabid , on here in the marketplace possibly Craigslist ,and to my lfs witch I've worked out a deal with.

I know it's not going to be all profit but my lfs is buying 1" fry at $2-3 each. Also I plan on selling fry for $2 each $10 for groups of 6.

You should have 4 - 6 growout tanks, so you can stagger all the fry by size, so that one tank has the smallest, and so on - so that the one with biggest fry, you can dip fish out, as they sell.

I do not know if any LFS will give you cash - most, if not all, are credit only. I have asked. If you found one that will pay cash, excellent.

So that would be at least 4 grow out tanks to 1 pair basically.

Well most don't but since I'm friends with the owner he will give me cash and even store credit helps since I can use it for supplies I will need to maintain the hatchery.

Ok so what about putting a 40 bs with a pair of each. Put the blond hrp and calico together in a 29 since they aren't a pair. Then set put Fry grow outs witch would be 20 for youngest fry 29 for the bigger and 40 b for biggest.

You do not need a separate growout tank for each pair - you can mix fry - as long as they have room to swim around and grow.

So, basically, you have your breeding tanks for each pair , and THEN (6) more tanks for fry growouts from all the respective pairs.

Each pair does not need a 40 gal. The 40's are much better for growouts, since you can put more fry in them.
