i have had my motoro for about 4 months now, and all of a sodden he has been clearing the sand from the corner and hanging out there usually proped on the glass. he is eating and acting very active and healthy, i am not concerned im just wondering what he is doin, is this normal?

rays will normally move sand around but if he is trying to stay off of it intentionally then maybe your sand is too rough, deep, sharp, or he dosent like the sand. try to post more info like what sand type you are using, if you have any other rays and are they doing this, how often do you stir the sand, how deep is it. just need more info to tell you if you should be concerned or not.
but it sounds like you might need to change type of sand or just take all out.

My pearl is always "rubbing" up the glass as if swimming at his reflection in the glass, this clears the sand, he does it in both corners. I think it is just normal behaviour - you often see Cichlids swimming at the glass and displaying at the reflection

I agree if he is trying to move the sand it may be a problem. But if he is doing something else and moving sand as a byproduct I wouldn't worry

i think that that would be deeper than an inch. im not sure about the sand put some in the palm of your hand and rub it around. all im finding out about it is that it is an abrasive siliceous material generally used for polishing, grinding, and sharpening. so im thinking the flint might be a little to sharp and abbrasive. but i could be wrong thats not uncommon.

my tank i cant keep the sand on the front of it as the rays are always pushing it back by going up and down the glass. but it sounds like he has one spot and dosent like to go off of it and that is what is worrying me. and im thinking flint is pretty sharp but maybe someone else has more experience with the sand you are using.

also since you can usually see his belly is it red or have marks on it. look very close if you can.
