So as you'll perhaps know, my convict has been unwell for the last few weeks; with no apparent explanation.

Came back tonight to find my JD with a scraped nose, further inspection and I've found my convict with missing scales, darkened colours, lying at the back of the tank.

Obviously this would suggest fighting, the only puzzling thing is I've never witnessed outright aggression between the two when I've been present, even when I'm watching from a distance. Can only assume fighting has taken place at night and has now culminated.

As of just now the con is keeping to the corner, the JD is making no moves toward him. Can't even isolate as my hospital tank cycle crashed when the filter broke.

My original thought was parasites, ordered some sterazin by water life to be safe.

Quick update, my convict died today; gutting as I'd had him for over a year.

Had a quick look over him, especially under the gills, no sign of flukes or external damage that would give a clear indication of death. Sigh, dedicating my 20 gal long to a new baby convict. Marble if I can source one, if not then a regular.

Feel as if the quality of convicts is so low due to inbreeding etc, I've had a few mysteriously die in similar circumstances, while sharing a tank with fish I've had for over 7 years.

They look really nice, would love to have one of them. As you mentioned, my LFS stocks bog standard (often low quality) fish; it'd be interesting to know if there are suppliers in Scotland for rarer types, so far my search has been fruitless.

Thanks for bringing Siquia to my attention! :)

Your welcome reading your post made me remember a discussion I had with one of the guy at my LFS that loves talking about taxonomy and he brought it to my attention that there are convict variants out in the wild that differ from river to river in central america some with lots of orange with males also having orange to some with almost no orange with teals even on their fins as well so I decided to do a little digging to find some info on the subject this was the closest I found the siquia with the variants I figured you would be interested
