So, I set up a 125 gallon w/5 Natts. Being as I'm obsessed with strong current and feel it does nothing short of miracles for fish I went monster.

I'm using 2 Seio 2600 gph pumps. I have one as a return pump and one as a powerhead. These guys are about 8'' so are loving it. This is an experiment and if it works as I think it will I'll mimic it in my 220's and use 2 4500 gph pumps.

I'm hoping to get access to a video recorder to show the current running through my tank.

i added koralia 8 (3250 gph)to my tanks and and all my p's are constantly swimming in the current.

Not trolling, but, do they really have choice?

yes they do actually.
in the pygo tank (standard 180) I have the power head angled to blow current against the glass so most of the current circle around the tank glass and leave the center with little current. and I have two large driftwoods (one on each side) to provide dead spots. sometimes they'll all chill in the center area to rest and sometimes few off them will take off and swim against the current in and out of it just for fun.
for my rhom tank is a 45"x45" I also have the current blow against the glass and have driftwood in there to provide more dead spots. the rhom always swim at where there's strong current.

that seems like overkill. but I guess as long as they have some "dead" spots in the current to stop and rest it's no bigie. but still 4200+GPH in a 125 is a ton of current.

After watching awhile, I think you may be right. One thing about it, I have a 1 1/4'' return line so the pressure isn't real high on that pump. The other pump is another story! This thing pumps like no tomorrow. The Seio is made with a wide venturi so there's no directing current toward glass. It just pushes the entire tank.

The Reds love it so far and ate about twice their norm. I disagree with current being nothing but healthy for fish. So many Natts. you see are severely overweight and it's fat rather than lean mass. Of course TOO much is not good but in this case I'll turn the volume down to half and try that.

i don't think powerheads should be used to help keep fish lean... they can be used to help with water movement and if you think your fish like it, by all means, go ahead, but if you want to keep your fish lean, feed them less. the reason you see so many fat pygos is because most people overfeed them.

the best looking fish that i see are usually on a once a week or so feeding schedule once they reach a decent size. if someone feels that they need to keep their fish swimming in a strong current all day to burn off all those extra calories, i think that the obvious thing to do would be to cut down on the food. the fish will look better and the water conditions will be much better because it cuts down on the amount of waste.
