My new 120 gallon tank just came in Friday. 4x2x2
I'm going to make a shorter wood stand for it. Looking at making it out of maple or mahogony, with a 2x4 frame. I plan on buying a FX5 for filteration.
For lighting I'm thinking on 2 twin bulb t8s.
Overall my goal is a large planted tank and transfering my fish from my 75 to the 120.

Funny thing is that after I bought it, I found a 180 acrylic for sale.

no doubt. after i bought my truck. I heard about another truck 3 years newer and it had the king ranch package. And it was 3k cheaper.

yeah but glass is better than acrylic especially for a planted tank.

inevitably, planted tanks mean higher lighting, which means you do end up with more algae to scrape off.

on an acrylic tank, this can lead to more scratches over time.

I think you are better going with what you did than the larger acrylic tank.

post pics!

Passed on the 180 acrylic tank. Got enough projects as is.
Got the 2x4 stand built yesterday. Cost me more in supplies than in actual wood.
This stand is by far the strongest I've built. I compaired the prebuilt stand from my 75 gallon and the one I just made; there is no comparison. Visually it looks like the stand couldn't even hold up a 20 gallon, but it was made for the 75. My stand I made, looks like it could hold up a small car.
I have 2 emporer 400s running on the tank til the fx5 comes in.

Why are single and twin tube 48" flourescent lights so friggin expensive???
I can remember 10-15 years ago they were half the price of today.
$132 for a new 48" twin tube: no thank you.:irked:

T8 shoplights cost $20 at lowes/home depot. Bulbs are $7 for 2

For $130 you could get a nice T5HO fixture

I've looked at t12 shop lights and love the price, but didn't find any bulbs for plants. I may look into that more. My other option is a standard t5 2 bulb unit I found on ebay for $83, but it comes with a 12k and an acetinic bulb.

The more I think about it , the better the t12 with grolight bulbs sound.
The overall cost of it is low, which is a plus.
