hi i just bought a new 240 gallon tank that is 8x2x2. i wanted to know what should i do to get it running to put a black arowana that is coming this weekend. i added some water, aquarium salt and left it there since. should i buy some feeders to throw them in there, have the filteration running and a heater to be prepared? i want to have the water just right before i throw the arowana in. also can someone tell me what black water can do for me?

uh oh!

there is more to it than that my man.

that tank / thouse filters should have been cycled long before he arrives.

git some bio-spira quick and get the filters cycling the tank already. get some stress-zyme pronto.

if you havent even cycled the tank can you not put of getting the arrowana for a few weeks until it has cycled properly i would get some test kits if i was you as well to monitor your water before adding it

Okay you need to add some established filter media when you add the Aro, or it will probably die of the ammonia and nitrite. If you can't do that, buy some of that bio-spira stuff (I think thats what it is called) to cycle it instantly. What kind of filters do you have? How big is the aro?

Yea, youre going to need to cycle that tank. Search around this forum, or just google search for things like cycling a freshwater tank. Its not difficult to do, just takes time, and theres no substitute for time, unless you have established filters from another tank that you can put on the new tank. Just like everyone else said, get the filters going, and either do a fishless cycle by adding pur ammonia to the tank, or get some feeders and throw them in there. I think there is a sticky about cycling in the setup and filtration forum as well...

i have two Eheim Pro II 2028 Canister Filter wich will be in the tank running tomorrow along with the heater. i bought 16 feeders to throw in the tank and added stress-zyme, ph buffer, chorine remover and a fluvia 103 canister filter which came from my 140gallon tank. Is there anything else i can do? i think ill wait till two weeks than add my black arowana, he is going to be about 10-12". Would bio ball help with anything? thanks for all the advise

Is the 103 on an established tank?? If not, its gonna take a lot longer to cycle your tank and get your ammonia levels down to a safe level. If you can, get a hold of some Biospira. Otherwise, cycling your tank w/o Biospira is gonna takes about 5-6 weeks.

If you cannot put the aro anywhere else in the meantime, you're gonna have to commit to doing 50% water changes every other day until the tank is cycled that way the ammonia doesnt kill your aro...
