I have Orinos that are about 14 mos and are really turning into beasts! I just picked up my first Azul in October - he's been a bear to get off of live minnows and red worms - my Orinos took me about two weeks but with this guy, I can't get a break. I've tried adding massivore to red worm slush and he turns up his nose. I'll alternate dropping a live minnow and then a piece of massivore and he'll spit it out. Any other ideas? The Azul seems to be slower growing too. Is this the case, are Azuls slower?
Thanks
(Sorry the photo isn't better. I just fed with red worms and the outside of my grow out is really dirty!)

I bought a small Azul once and I couldnt get him to take pellets. I had him for about 2 months and tried starving him for a couple of weeks at a time but no success on pellets. I was able to get him to eat small krill but he would only eat a few or so. I gave up and traded him away because he was costing me so much money on feeders. All my other pbass I was able to get on pellets by short starvation and throwing the pellets in from a few feet away so the pellets wold hit the water hard and make a spalsh. I think that action stirs something in the fishes instinct to hit it and eat it. I did hear that Azuls grow slower, but the one I had grew two inches in the two months I had it, about the same as my kelberis.

I have an Azul also wich I was getting fustrated with for only wanting live. Have had him for 3 month,
What I did was Froze some live feeder gold fish. Then I did feed Azul for a few days and threw in a thawed goldfish and he takes it right away.
starved him again for a few days. Gave him another thawed Goldfish.
Few more days then cut up the thawed goldfish in halfs. He took them.
Did this with five goldfish in total.
Once they were all gone I starved him for almost two weeks and yesterday threw in Prawn and he mouthed it, then the other fish attacked the prawn and the Azul rushed the Prawn and ATE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was like a Revelation lol. WHat feeling I tell you.
DONT GIVE UP

It took me a full month of starving to get my old wc orinos on pellets. By far the hardest fish I've had to switch to a pellet diet. However once they started taking pellets, they pounded them, hard. They got to where they preferred pellets over anything else. Keep with it. Fish are resilient don't be afraid to starve them. In the wild they go for weeks between meals all the time.

Trace, you have any Cichla at the moment either then the ones in your massive Tank? Love my Umbee and other new worlds but Man I love the sheer power Cichla poses !!! Would love to do a group of Cichla

Speaking of groups, I also think that really helps with pellet training. Because fish tend to compete for food, a group of cichla untrained may take to pellets quicker because of the desire to compete for food, whatever form it is. I had my one small azul by himself because he was too small to be in with the others. In hindsight I should have kept him in and took a chance. I took a chnace with a small temensis I introduced to my cichla group and he took to pellets within two days.

No don't have any cichla anymore. I got rid of the original group of orinos I had and the lone orino in the big tank is gone as well. It was much larger than all the other fish other than the umbees and raised too much hell. One day I will reintroduce cichla to the 1400, but I have several projects that take precedence over that. Cichla are cool, but after so long to me the feeding response lost it's appeal and they just don't have the personality of some other cichlids.
