So I had an impulse buy today and ended up coming home with a Sengal Birchr (MS?)...he is just a small little guy right now, and I'm ashamed to say I really do not know much about them, except I like them. Right now he is in my 55..tank mates at the time are....2 Gold Sevs, 1 blue Gourami, 3 Paradise fish, 1 Firemouth and 2 Cats.

Not sure if he can stay in this tank or not....I am fixing up a 70g right now that I was planning to make a Lake Malawi tank out of, hoping he can go in that tank. I also have my 150, but there is know way he could go in there right now..that is home to my Oscar, 4 JDs, a Midas/RD, and a RD. So he would just be food in that tank being only like 3" long.

He is hiding right now in the driftwood so I can't get any pics yet of him out of the bag, but I have a couple of him in the bag when he was floating.

I would appreciate any input on my newest guy!

LOL, I know...I know, bad call to impulse buy and I am horrible at it!! Usually it is Betta's I come home with cause I just feel so bad for them...I end up grabbing up the one with the least amount of water and take him! I have 3 males and 8 females as of now, because of it!!

But OMG, this poor little fella...his tank was horrible and the others were either dead or dying, I HAD to take him!!;)

lol you should come to a place called "pets at home" here....you would end up taking them all

They are pretty easy to keep; just make sure there is absolutely no way for it to escape. Mine made it through a 1/4 inch gap between the glass lid and the upper rim of my overflow, and then ended up dead in my sump.

They are carnivorous, so it should be fed frozen/freezedried bloodworms, krill, etc. as well as various pellets. Omega one shrimp pellets, sinking cichlid pellets, and Hikari sinking carnivore pellets are good. HBH krill pellets are also good, especially at that size, because the pellets are small.

I assume they will also eat live insects, but those don't sink. Worms are good though. They will eat live fish too.

they get about 12 inches

Thank you!!! Well, I pretty much have all that food my pellets aren't Omega, they are Hikari although when these are gone I had already planned on switching to Omega after reading a post made by someone. I feed all my CAs the frozen bloodworms, beefheart, shrimp, and krill...so it looks as though he eats pretty much everything I feed my fish already.

Well, I will have to move him eventually then, since the 55 is only 12" wide and the 70 is only 13" (very odd size tank...60L x 13W x 21H).

So when he gets closer to like 8-10" would he do ok with the Oscar, JDs, Midas/RD?

Oh, I forgot to add...about their rate of growth, do they grow slow or are they pretty fast growers?

Polypterus are great fun. They aren't the fastest growing fish. Feed lots of protein rich foods.

Thanks Wurm!! BB got me over at AC, and filled me in on everything about em....and I mean EVERYTHING! WOW!!! :D
