Not according the review I read (on the gas model). The guy testing the car said he was lucky to get 50mpg. I assume the diesel model is better. Still, in the states I'd feel safer on a bike.

50mpg is still alot!!! My Cruiser gets 20 if I'm lucky. Plus they're ridiculously easy to park!!!

GEO METRO

An old Metro with a nice paint job could definitely compete with a smart car in every aspect expect for the "boxed in protection" the Smart provides.

A jetta TDI does the same while allowing you to have passengers. I'd also feel a lot safer in a jetta. I don't want to get hit by an excursion that's being driven by a soccer mom if I'm in a smart.
