OK, so my fatf coming in seems to be more batf looking. Does anyone around here have experience w/ them feeding by tail amputation? I know they are unique in that they attack and cut the tail off then continue feeding, i just dont want it to do that to my bichirs. Anyone have exp w/ a batf attacking a tank mate like that? Any and all stories are welcome

Keep him fat and happy and he won't have to resort to that type of dramatic behavior. You'll find that like most other predators, your tigerfish is quite happy to be fat and lazy. If he has a supply of food that is readily available with little effort to acquire, there will not be a reason for him to undertake the expensive and risky activity of attacking a fish that is larger than he is. It is not unusual for larger tigerfish to become quite lazy and almost tame when it comes to predatory aggression: why spend the energy to kill something to eat if I know I'm going to get a handful of pellets every day? Conspecific aggression is always a concern with tigers, but once he's pellet trained, you'll be mostly out of the woods.

Also, your polys have ganoid scales, which are literally armor plating. They're one of the few types of fish that are well equipped to actually shrug off the bite of a similarly sized tigerfish.

Nice! And thanks to your advice ill be pellet training him right off the bat. He wont have a hunger issue in my tank haha i do know that polypterus have scales twice as thick as gar, i just didnt know if tigers are strong enough to bite through. Figured id be safe n get some input. It would be awesome if mine got "tame" enough to pet haha

My little FATF lets me get within about an inch of him when I'm in the tank petting Drogo. I'm sure I could end up petting him if I wanted, but he has a bad habit of 'tasting' my fingers so I try to scare him off. That could be a problem when he gets bigger. At 6", he can already draw a little blood.

Good luck with the pellet training!

Another thing working in the poly's favor is the fact that ATF don't really pay a whole lot of attention to bottom dwellers (at least in my experience). I have had a royal pleco in with both my TATF and then my GATF, and neither of them even gave the royal a second glance.

As long as he's well fed and the bichir isn't constantly swimming in front of your ATF's face, I don't think you'll have any issues.

Oh yeah i can imagine, max can probably take fingers off by now if he really wanted them haha. Ill have to be more careful then i am w/ my red hi fin. Btw chic, so i dont need to start another thread, are you good w/ IDing sp. Hi fins? Mine literally has no red, no nothing that looks like any other ery ery ive ever seen. He was different then the rest in the tank, thats why i got him. Ill attatch a pic

The only one who may do that is the gold dust, or the palmas palmas i plan on picking up. The black volta endli and ornate will be fine though, they dont leave the bottom much, i also plan on trying a small thai yarelli goonch soon. I try to keep a few feeders in the tank (i breed my own guppys, so dont get your panties in a knot lol) at all times anyway, along w/ a feeding of worms, brine shrimp, and tilapia every few days. Batf will be on pellet though, so hopefully the rest of my fish dont convert it back to non live haha
