I finally bit the bullet and bought this little sand filter to aid the sump on my 500g tank.
I am going to test the pump it comes with to see just what type of flow it can produce.
I going to run about 10kg of sand instead of the 20kg it can take which should provide both mechanical and biological filtration.

The pump is rated for 4000L an hour and consumes a low 60W but I am a bit suspect at it's head height rating.
It say's 4m or it could be .4m, I am not sure, but I may have to ditch it for a Rio 17HF or 20HF for similar flow and more energy effeciency.

Anybody have experience running these types of filters on aquariums?

Bump for anyone....

I have never dealt with sand filters, but I hear they are the best once you get them set up and dialed in.

4m head height sounds right for that unit. Remember, a lot of those filter types are meant to have a high head pressure as they pump long horizontal distances, which does increase head pressure slightly.

Thanks for your replies guys and I did check with the seller who assures me it is 4m.
I will post on the results of the filter and water quality.
