So last night I got a hot tip that my favorite lfs got in some bowfin, so I rushed over this morning and picked up the last one! (There were actually two, but one was on hold.) It's around 4", and started eating blackworms within 10 minutes of being added to the tank! I've been out of the native fish keeping game for a few years, and I figure there couldn't be a better fish to get me back in ;)

Heres a full tank shot, its a 29. The reason its not full is I've heard its better to keep their tanks shallow when young, so they can get to the surface easier. There is duckweed for surface cover, and the temp is around 75-76F. Filtration is a sponge filter with a power head.

Any idea why its tail might be like this? Both of them were exactly like this, maybe its to tag them for some reason?

Thanks for any comments, questions, or suggestions! I will update as it grows!

And yes, I DO know how big they get, I have a 125 for it to eventually be in, as well as a performed pond (I think its around 150 gallons) that I will be getting whenever I go pick it up from my grandparents.

Nice fish, theres one at the Bass Pro in Springfield Mo that is very active and fun to watch.

They had one at the bps here , but I haven't seen it in quite awhile. Their tanks are sick! A bit heavily stocked but they have some real monsters!

nice fish, i plan to have a few hundred with in the next month or so...the tail is split due to fighting...they take chunks out like that...you have a male...when i get mine i could get you a female if you would like...

Yeah , this tank was heavily stocked until they moved a 7ft alligatior gar in their.....now theyre are alot less Bass and sunfish!

DONT HEAT IT AT ALL....just picked one the same size up too...keep up on water changes there sensitive to ammonia and nitrates....and often die young from starvation

Nice pick up! Good luck with getting him out of the fragile young stage.

heat doesn't matter...they do well in 85f...they die young not from starvation, but from parasites...nothing against you, as you have good advise for the most part...just some isn't acurate...
