Finally got the tank clean, aquascaped it, and put everything together.

The filter that came with it has a junk pump, though. So I've got an AC 110 on order, and once that's in, I'll start a mini cycle by using established scrubbies from my sump.

Super happy with the look of the slate I got at menards for the substrate. Can't believe I haven't done this before. Cost $4 for all of the slate in the tank. It did take a while to rinse it, but definitely worth it. I'll for sure be using this again. BTW, it looks darker in person than in the pics.

Also picked up the driftwood in a fish store in Indy yesterday. It was sitting really high on a shelf, and had cob webs all over it. Cleaned it up, and it looks crazy ominous in my opinion.

Can't wait to get some of these mini Dovii in there.

What do you think?

Yeah, it is a little darker than my other tanks. I decided to try the zoomed "ocean sun" bulb. It's got more output in the blue spectrum. Hopefully it'll make the blues on the Grammy's pop.

If not, I'll be switching back to the standard daylight/sun bulbs I usually use, and that'll make it brighter. Will just have to wait and see how it looks with fish in it.

I like the look of the setup, but is that slate on the sharp side? If so, it might not be the best substrate for CAs who like to sift through such things.

Looks great! I just actually sold my 8 inch male grammodes. He took up a 50 breeder by himself and was crazy agressiive! They are agreat looking cichlid. How big are the ones you will be getting or do you already have them?

i think they are worthy of their own tank. I have a 75 full of baby fish. List include 5 festeas, a cuban, a trimac, a lyonsi, and a grammy. Depending on how thinks go i could end up with just the grammodes and trimac with each having their own tank.

Don't have them yet. They'll be 3"ers, and I'm going to get 4 and grow out until I find the one I want to keep, or two if they get along.

And the slate isn't sharp. The corners are actually rounded.

Next project on this tank s going to be setting up some good looking tubes to run the wires through. I'm also going to build a new canopy as the one that's on there is horrible.

I like the dark look myself. Have you thought about running a black background behind the tank? That may make a really nice dark effect and the wood pop more with the lighting and would hide all the cords you have now/add down the road.
