this is my new jag that i had up in vegas. he took a 10 hour drive last night to me in cali so its still a bit stressed. i thought it was a male but now it looks just like my smaller female. the very second i put it in, my female and the new one havent left each others side. heres a couple pics. tell me what you think. male or female?

looks like a plump female to me....unless you just fed it a bunch of food.

can anybody tell me for sure if this jag is female? i already have one and i dont want another. for all the ppl who do have males what are the first signs to look for? at what size or age do the black squares begin to fade? this one is around 7 in. im having no luck finding a male. thanks

if its side by side with your other jag and they were the same sex then they would be flaring at each other or fighting so if your saying they follow each other around and it sound like they like each other then you have a male and female.

Male Jags are VERY slender through the belly, only looking plump after JUST eating. Males also have an upward pointing dorsal fin, almost flag like where the females is rounded pointing parallel to the body. Two male jags at 7 inches will not tolerate each other so if they are getting along I would say you have a good chance at a pair, no guarantee because I have had many combos that work that don't make sense. The easiest way to tell is to feed them a lot do a large water change and turn the heat up. The male will most likely start doing the typical waving motion over the female enticing to spawn. If the waving begins you definitely have a pair just give it time. Flaring of gills head to head is male to male aggression. Hope it's a pair good luck.

not necessarily, there are many instances from members on here where they had lesbian couples that even took turns laying eggs:ROFL:

yes but its rare so going with the odds then id say one of each.

thank you guys soooo much! the swimming together is more of a relationship than fighting. they havent attacked each other at all. my female which has already layed eggs once, is cleaning a flat rock while the bigger one hovers over her. what temperature should i bring the water up to? right now its at 79.5 - 80 degrees. thanks again!
