Well here ?she? Is. I hope its a lucius that's what fish store chick said. And all the pictures I saw looked the same as "her" to my untrained eye.

Look at that belly. "She" just ate.

All "her" color went away when I stuck "her" in the little tank for the pic.

Then "she" started stressing.

So I put "her" back in her tank.

Anyway there "she" is. Thanks for looking.

Does anyone know if its a female. I think it is but until I get conformation I will ?her?.

Cool. How can you tell when he is colored up and not stressed it looks like the female pic. How can you tell? I'm not questioning your call just want to know the process it takes to get it.

I don't know that's what I was asking. All the info I can find is from that link you sent. And it dident specify color variations from one sex to the other I can't find much info on any pikes really. Every time you google any scientific name it pops up with a few in depth clasification pages, numerous ways to get to that mostly cichlids page and threads on forums. Were should I look? Im very eager to learn more.

The key is to pay attention to the dorsal. If you look at the male on Mostly Cichlids (top fish) the dorsal is pretty plain. The female (on the bottom) though has a black and red stripe in the dorsal.

Generally females from the Saxatilis group will have a black splotch in the dorsal, and either a white or black stripe in it as well. Plus they will almost always have a rosy red, pinkish plump belly and pelvic fins. ;)

Lugubris pikes, the females will normally get the crisp white/clear stripe in the dorsal, and the pinkish belly and pelvic fins. Those are the main things to look for. Some species, like sp. 'xingu I' are quite easy to tell apart, cuz females are very colorful, where as males are more drab.

PLUS males almost always grow faster and larger than females. That can only be noticed really though if you have a group of them or so.

Ok I just read the saxatilis article twice I'm a pro now. J/k but really I read about a thin white line dident see anthing about a black one (but you know your shtuff) I will take your word for it. I will use this to find a female next time I'm at the lfs. Not a female to buy just to sex.

I am so used to typing in a scientific name and getting 35 care sheets or profiles for every spieces. Thanks man.

Why not get him a girl, pikes always look their best when they are showing off to each other! :) Don't worry about the sexing thing, once you see a male and a female saxatilis type pike side by side, the difference will be quite obvious. The pink belly is also a dead give away. . .

Generally it is a white stripe, but some of the Saxatilis pikes appear to lack this, and instead have a blackish and red stripe. Kinda cool looking. The belly is normally the give away. ;) Females will have a 'beer gut' almost all the time, and it will be pinkish red when mature. :)
