Okay, I bought 5, 1.5-2 inch Managuensis, hoping for a male. Right now I have them all in a 55 gallon in aquarium. The tank has been set up for about 4 months and all the levels are perfect. I keep the aquarium at about 82 degrees Fahrenheit. I've raised one female Managuense before, and saw how it looked throughout all of its growing. Unfortunately I had to get rid of her because; with her constant laying of eggs (with no mates in the tank), and myself having to remove them all the time, she became incredibly aggressive toward me, and began attacking everything that hit the water, no matter what it was.

Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone has had experience with these guys and can tell me some of the first signs of male or female. I know about the horizontal bars, spots, and hooked mouth.. I just wanted to know if there was anything else. Also, with the 5 jags in a 55 gal aquarium, I thought they could all co-exist.. I mean, they're only about 2 inches after all. However, one of the fish, as soon as they all got into the tank, began ruthlessly attacking all the other fish. It's not the biggest one, nor smallest.. But he/she has become ridiculously aggressive. Its eyes glow a red/orange, and all of its stripes and spots are faded. The fish has become almost a pure gold fish with red eyes. When all the other fish are in the corner, it resumes its comfortable behavior, gets back its colors and blue fins.. Just want to know if there's anything I can do to fix this problem?

Here's a photo of him/her in a fairly aggressive state:

Never before have I owned a fish like this, I've never seen a Jaguar cichlid lose all of its bars and just turn into a possessed looking fish.

It varies.. it was about 80 a few days ago, then it just bumped up to 82.. Someone must have bumped the heater. A lot of people (websites) say 74-86, I just kinda figured since its still in that range I could keep it there. But I'll probably turn it down a bit if you think it's too high. Maybe they'll act a little differently then lol.

males have vertical broken bars when young and when he is mature he will not have little to no vertical bars at all. female will have thinner vertical bars and a more visible horizontal bar. i agree the water is a little too warm

Thanks! But what about this one's aggression / barless head? is it just some wicked aggression color? or is something wrong with it? they're all acting alright, this one is just super aggressive.

Blah, got home from work today to find 4 of my 5 cichlids dead. They were all destroyed, no scales or fins left, the one that's left is now alone, with no bites out of it. Ridiculous aggressive baby jag, it kill the two smallest and two biggest ones.. Craziness. Also, my water is at 80 degrees now, still working on making it a little lower, around 78.. I just home the one that's left is a male>< FYI, all the 5 fish were baby jags. 2 about an inch, 2 were 2 inches and the one thats left is about 1.5 inches

That sucks,I would have suggested a lot of hiding places and maybe even a few good size dithers so they could focus on them and not each other.I think the changing colors of him were normal as he ramped up his rage, the few jags I keep before would also change with mood

Yea, I think this little guy/gal is just always mad.. Regular colors now, but my tank has drift wood, a ship, and rock structure and it would go to each one and kick the fish out until they were all in the corner. Hopefully it's a male though, otherwise all of the fish I bought would have been a waste of money
