The pet store owner told me that he was a Melon Pleco. He is my first pleco. I think he is cute. My boyfriend named him Nascar because he says from the top he looks like he has racing stripes.
Actually I believe you or the pet store owner are confusing the fruits... This is a MANGO pleco, Baryancistrus sp./ L-047, not "melon pleco".
It's a wonderful pleco, not too much sensitive nor prone to hunger strikes (the main problem with gold nuggets). A piece of driftwood is reccomended for this species. They're somewhat aggressive with other plecos, and usually very shy. Provide a suitable shelter for it. Good luck with your new pleco.
Oh, almost forgot... Very nice specimen. Good pickup.
Thanks Daniel, well at least now i have my names straight. He is a bit shy, likes to hide inside a big aquarium piece i have. Do you know why it is sugested that he have drift wood? Sorry, like i said this is my first pleco.
U have a L47 "magnum/mango pleco". It'll get to a fairly decent size, about 11-12". A lot of plecos gnaw on bogwood and it is beneficial to them in its content, and it helps with there metabolism and digestive processes. It is an omnivore, and mine had a tendency to prefer the meatier foods. Feed it zucchinni, broccoli, peas, cucumber, potatoes, lettuce etc. most greens should be taken. It'll also ironically eat mangos. But like every pleco, not vegetarians, they need protein, and you can give it bloodworms, blackworms, pieces of prawn etc. Yours has some really nice colour on it, and im sure providing the protein only helps the plec to keep its colours so prominant. however i gotta say looks a bit thin, so start feeding it well, and it'll get big soon enough. good luck with it
