OK, so i just picked this up for $25 :headbang2

next month i am moving, and i will be setting it up, and i plan on putting in 4 7" Comets, and a couple small koi, and maybe an albino chanel catfish

Questions:
1) Whats the best way to filter this? I have looked around and there are a lot of different ways people have done it. Whats the best?

2) I would like to have it be a raised pond, on my deck so that my small dogs leave it alone. I would frame it in so that it was surrounded by wood so it matches the deck. Is there a good way to do a raised pond with a plastic liner? How should I support the upper level of the pond?? I put a picture of a raised pond, just in case you're wondering what i mean

NICE!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

I figured its not a bad start ... I had been looking around for a little while, and this guy had it listed for 40. I called for dimensions and he said its pretty big, come get it today and its $25, so I told him I was on my way, lol!!!

I didnt measure it, but it's at least 8' long, avg 2' wide, and avg 1.5' deep in the center ... so somewhere in the 175-225g range is my guess ... I will keep track of it when I fill it, and get an accurate number.

Like always, my ideas are going 100mph, so my plan is to try this out, and see if I enjoy the pond style stuff.
If I dont like it, I will sell it. :nilly:
If I do, I will go much larger :headbang2:naughty:

Anyone who has checked out the pond that is set up out at New Albany ReefSystems knows how sweet his large pond is. I would take his setup, throw in some large albino cats, some sturgeon :drool:, and never leave his deck !!!!!!!!!

putting the cat with the comets will end bad for the comets. possibly the koi if they dont grow fast enough. either way, up to you. i would go with a simple 55 gallon plastic drum filter.

To raise it and evenly support it I would make like a kids sand box. That way the bottom will be supported well and it wouldn't have a tendency to crack. Just fill in around it with loose sand once its in the box.

try something like a TETRA canister filter simple idea that will work simply and a PONDMASTER pump but if you have a gravel bottom you might have to change the pump to one that can handle the occasional bit of gravel

Above ground in Ohio you might have to bring them in for the winter. Goldfish can stay for life, but Koi and cats may only be growout in it.

i figured they will have to be brought in or moved to a friends pond, since it is going to be shallow enough that it will probably freeze....
i know it will only be a temporary house for them, i will either go much larger, or give them to a friend with a larger pond...

as for the person who said the cat with comets will end badly, my comets are a fat 6-7" and the cat will only be 3" when i get it... the cat should leave everything alone, and when he gets large, i will move something :)
