Went to 1 of the local Lfs's and found a 6-7 inch RTC,they were asking $89.99.I watched the fish for a few minutes and noticed 1 of his gills were slightly curled and he was breathing heavily.I asked to see the manager,he came over and i pointed out the problems with the cat and asked for a discount,he tried to tell me that the gill was curled due to him hiding behind a rock and the rock caused the curl,he also stated that the heavy breathing was due to warm water.I told him the rock causing his gill curl was a crock of bull then asked why the 2 large Oscars in the same tank were not breathing heavily due to the warm water.Just then i noticed the owner of the store walking by,i approached him, pointed out the fishes problems, told him the load of crap his manager gave me then asked for a discount on the cat,the owner said i was right and told me i could have it for $59.99,so i saved 30 bucks,do you guys think this was a good deal??With proper care will his gill curl be alright??I just got him tonight and he wont eat,is this normal??Any advice is greatly appreciated!!Thanks!!:nilly:

Not to shure about the gill curl but try to get him eating asap not all catfish eat at first and it is always better to give them 24 hours to settle in! if he wont eat you can try shrimp, earth worms, feeder guppies or a similar fish (I used white clouds)! Most big cats caint refuse Hikaria Carnivor sinking pellets!
I due believe gill curl is caused by bad water but dont quote me on that!

I also heard Gill Curl was caused bt bad water.

actually we seem to have come to the conclusion between a few of us here on the board that Gill Curl in RTC's is caused by having a PH issue with the water. As for it going away... not likely to go away ... might look better in time but your chances arn't very good for it to disapear.

Don't worry about it not eating as of yet... it will take some time to get used to it's new home and then will eat you out of house and bank account once it feels ready ;)

They will often go on a hunger strike after a change in enviornment like it's just had. So don't worry to much as if there is one thing that a RTC does not do it turn down food for all THAT long ... they love to eat!!!

Post up some pics when you get a chance and introduce us all already ;)

I sure will basslover, does gill curl also cause heavy breathing??Although his breathing has seemed to calm down overnight.
The heavy breathing could be a bunch of things, could just be stress... might have just eaten... could be that the water quality sucked....I would think that the cause for this guy was prob being in with the oscars... their movement would have stressed it somewhat prob...
