I have been fishing the cape cod canal, which to those that dont know is one of the most difficult places to fish in MA. The water is moving like a giant 50ft deep river with all sorts of debris to get caught on the bottom. it takes some serious tackle so I invested in these two items:

Lamiglas JH9MHS 9ft surf rod
Van Staal VS250 reel in black

I'm gonna put 40lb. to 60lb. powerpro braid on it and start jigging the bottom again with my 5oz. jig set-ups rather than safely fishing the surface with plugs.

never heard of a bail-less reel before, but I'd love to see it strung up. I bet that cleans easily too. I killed a couple of reels dropping them in the surf before.

these reels are water-proofed so the gears and the drag are all sealed in. im so pumped for this reel.

ya i got 2.

the van staals are great! service 'em once a year ($38) and they'll last a lifetime, maybe more!

the bailless is no big thing. its like useing a non-level wind, you get used to doing it (picking the line up with ur finger) that it eventually comes naturally.

what do they do when you get them serviced? i read that they can upgrade them as well but from what i've read it seems there is nothign that needs to really be upgraded. is it possible to service these reels yourself?

great setup, i use some fiberglass lamiglass blanks in my custom bass rods, work great for crankbaits, never used van stall, but i've seen some for sale, and they got a hefty price tag.

yes its possible but it breaks warrenty. (i think they only come with 1yr warrenty now anyways, mines life time, unless i open it..:screwy: )

the tool to open it hasnt been sold for several years, you have to get it specially made, and that can cost upwards of $200 :WHOA:

they'll replace drag washers, if the gears are warped/ground down they'll replace it, basicly anything wrong will be replaced. ive even known guys to get a free spool of PP line from them

ill see what i can find about the tool and the few people who make/have it.
