I scored a pretty good deal on ebay for a Nuclear cartridge filter. $25. After the auction was over and I paid with paypal the seller told me he was going to cancel the auction and refund my money because it didn't fetch enough money. Hahahah... after the stare down of a couple days and him sending a cancellation notice which I refused he finally gave in and sent me the canister with an apology. I figured if I didn't get the canister I would at least get him kicked off ebay so no one else had to hassle with a lowlife... but he came through in the end.

It arrived today in very good shape. I still have no idea how to tell if it is the 25sqft or 40sqft version... and there are no markings to be found on the canister or the cartridge.

Anyway I connected it up and it leaks like a sieve. I pulled it apart, pulled the O ring and gave it a good coat of vasaline. Still leaks like a sieve. I gave is quite a few wallops with a dead blow hammer when reassembling it the second time and got at least an extra quarter turn from the first time assembling.

I assume these suckers can be made to seal? Should I get a new O ring or both an O ring and a new lid?

How can you tell the difference between the 25 and 40 sqft versions of the canisters? Are the canisters identical and only the cartridges are different? Can the cartridges be interchanged? The cartridge that came with the filter looks to be in great shape but it does seem a little loose in the canister, not much but just loose enough to move a bit when the lid is on. Is this normal?

i had the same problem with my second hand Ocean Clear filters. Buy a new new o-ring, I think the older and newer models are different so make sure you get the correct one. With a new o-ring, a little bit of lube (I used food grade silicone) and a rubber mallet to tighten you should be in good shape. FYI - I bought the o-rings from a local industrial supply house, they were a fraction of the cost from the local fish stores, which had to order them in, and I had it in my hands the same day.

I purchased a new style O ring, old style O ring and lid online. The stupid thing still leaks like a sieve!!!!

I have a pretty good sized pump pushing water through the Ocean Clear, I am kind of thinking the stupid thing isn't built to handle the pressure. I am thinking of possibly trying to put the pump after the Ocean Clear and suck the water through the Ocean Clear.
