So I have a heavily stocked 180. Using 1 fx5 And 3 ac110s.....looking to replace my 2nd fx5 that recently quit on me. Water test have always been good but water never seemed crystal clear. Anyway this is what I decided to do with the 3 ac110s. I went to home depot bought the thick white circular buffing pads used for for wood floors no chemicals are in the pads I tripled checked. They cost $6 each I bought 3. I cut them to the same size as the stock ac 110 sponge. Make sure you rinse them very well after you cut them
At the bottom of the ac110 i put 12 scrubbies then 2 layers of the buffer pads that I cut then the stock sponge on top. I did this to all 3 filters and my water was crystal clear in a few hours. Water test still good. I know the buffer pads will probably clog within a month so thats why i used them in the ac 110s so i can reach and clean them very easily as needed. What do you guys think?

Good idea. Have you tried floss?

Hey Ive heard of pot scrubbies best used in wet dry so maybe you might want to place something like pond matrix instead of the pot scrubbies, however if its working for you don't change it lol

Thanks for the idea btw as I will be getting an ac110 for a smaller tank probably 20 gallons or so

Great idea, I'll have to try that with my AC 70. I'm using that right now on a 75 gallon pleco tank, in addition to a rena 3.

Did the buffer pad slow down the water flow on the filter at all? Looks good, should work really good.

Thanks all. Buffer pads hasn't slowed flow down at all so far. The difference in the clarity is insane from before the new set up

Hey so the stock media isn't any good ?? I've always used the sponge, carbon and biomax ceramic rings made by aquaclear so are these media no good ? Should I do the same with my aqua clear 110s my 180 is like a growout constantly stocked with fish with a heavy bio load and never crystal clear

The way Aqua Clear are designed you could add, or use the media that came with the filter with for example I don't use carbon , so replaced with filter floss on top of the biomax.:). I still use the original pad that came with the filter. IMO Biomax works well for me.
