I just joined monsterfishkeppers.com today, and am in need of some help. I have been in this hobby now for 20+ years and have developed an interest in the oddballs (e.cats, wolf fish ect.). Well recently I found an electric eel at my local pet shop and was so excited, I got the tank set up, everything was perfect! I went the next week picked out the one I wanted got home and enjoyed my new friend. A few days later he decided to play with my heater and burned his head, just a small little spot so I put the heater under the gravel and he seemed to get better. He then developed a small white circle on his side, I tried to find out what it was to no prevail. It almost looked like a small white stick sticking out with white covering around it. It got bigger and bigger and took over his whole side. Well today he finally passed and I lost because I dont know what I did wrong or even what this was.

Electric Eel was 8" long, he was kept in a 55gallon tank (yes I know they grow big as I have a 225 that would have housed him when he was full grown) I have a cascade filter, water temp was 76f and a pH of 7.2, no ammonia. Tank ran for 1 week before I brought him home. he was being fed rosie reds, guppies and beefheart. I will be getting another one in the future, I just need to know what happened, and if anyone has good advice or any websites that can help me. Thank you so very much!

First, be most wellcome!

As to the electric eel I have no idea, because I never saw those symptoms.

I have seen bacterial infections that are similar to what you describe appeared, but not growing and covering the whole side of the fish.

I would say it is something the fish had, already. I see no bearing with the heater burn.

Lastly, I find your PH slightly high for an amazonian fish, and your temps too low.

Sorry for your lose..

what you describe as the white stick sounds very much like what I know as "Anchor worm" which is a parasite that attaches to the fish usually near the fins. I see this alot in goldfish we get at work. I've tried a few ways to rid this parasite but ultimately it came down to useing tweezers and carefully pulling the nasty out. I'm pretty sure my name for it isn't anything near the scientific name or possibly the usuall common name.. but it does sound like the same parasite.
