Ive got a 10 gal growout runnin which at first I just could not keep the params under control. But now the nitrate and ammonium are really good but my nitrite levels are still high. I know its cuz i just put a different and better filter in but the bacteria hasnt bound to the media fully yet. I think once that has happened it will be ok, does anybody know any temporary solutions untill then or ways to make that happen faster?

Squeeze an established sponge into the new filter.....

What do you keep in the tank? If you do not keep something in there all the time, the bacteria will starve. There has to be a constant source of amonia.

For next time..

When you upgrade your filter, leave the old filter in the tank for a few weeks. It will keep doing it's job while the new filter get established.

For now..

Can you put some media from an established filter into the new unit. It wont instantly make it fully cycled, but it will give you some biological filtration thats working right away. Or bring a spare established filter in from another tank to help out short term while the new one gets established.

If you cant do anything else, do a few large water changes to temporarily keep the nitrite levels down while the filter completes it's cycling.

Cheers

Ian

thanks ian

I have the new filter in there with the old one... im thinkin ill just squeeze out the old on into the bio filtration of the new one and hopefully that will do the trick...
