my pair of puffers

hi i recently got a pair of puffer id? red eye red tail (Carinotetraodon irrubesco) i believe
why does the male keep tryin to kill the female any help plz?
i have them kept in a 540l with a few of american cichlids the male is eating fine but the female is just hiding away because of the male trying to kill her and they were ment to be a pair? are they?

Yep. Red eye red tail they are! Nice fish. I am growing out a male in a 5g right now.

What kind of American cichlids are you keeping with these?!?

Some puffers just don't get along. I'd seperate them or else one or both will wind up dead.

just so you know i have now separated the puffers from eachother and the cichlids
i think i'am going to go with bichirs and american cichlids now
