I am so excited.. I recently put my male Paratilapia in a 75g tank, divided with what I suspected to be a female..

This morning, I woke up, and there was a clutch of about 200+ eggs! They are in a 'yoke' type sac, similar to some species of frogs, red in color.. Laid in between the egg crate divider..

Although I don't expect to be ultra successful with this first batch, I am very excited to know I have a spawning pair!

I hope to provide MFK with all their Paratilapia needs :P

Pics later today!

WOW - the eggs sound very interesting.

P I C S!

Congrats, I've been trying to find a mate for my 8" male with no success. Can you throw uop some pics?

Came home from church and I forgot one thing!

I had a striped raphiel cat on the side of the female.. When I got home, he had a huge batch of eggs in his mouth. :(

Atleast I know I have a breeding pair.. I am going to re-do the tank and get rid of the tankmates.. Pics upon next spawning!

congrads!
how do you sex them? i have read some stuff about fin shape but there's not much more info than that. how large are they now? did you see them displaying to one another and shaking?

we need pictures!

Well.. I thought the male was the larger, more colorful one.. It has longer lyres on it's dorsal and anal fin.

However, after the clutch of eggs were devoured, that 'he' had a string of eggs hanging from his rear-end. I certainly hope I don't have 2 females.

I will find out more as this project continues. They are both only about 5-6" right now, splitting a 75g tank. The tank had catfish and silica sand in it, as I had no intentions of breeding them this soon.. I am going to clean it out and set it up for breeding this time.

I have had to divide them, because no matter the tank size, even 400g, they fight until near death. The divider is the key to breeding I believe.

cool.
can you post up some pictures of your set up as it currently stands? it would be helpful if you posted some more pictures of each individual fish, if possible.
how do you get these guys into condition? pretty standard stuff?

one of my fish has a more rounded end to the dorsal fin, whilst two others i have are definitely more pointed. however i've seen pictures of older pairs and that really isn't much to go by... it would help to see fish around my size if you can.

thanks and appreciate the update!

It happened by accident..

Split them up in a 75g with a divider, and they spawned a few days later.

They are very intolerant of each other, as they wouldn't co-habitate in a 375g... Divide them up and they are love buddies.

The divider had two broken pots pushed up against it, and a rock up against the divider.. they spawned right on the divider.

I had always presumed the larger paratilapia, with the pointed dorsal and anal fins, and more spangling was the male.. However, I noticed post-spawn that this same fish had egg sac still dangling out of it's rear area.

Hopefully I do not have 2 females, as the second paratilapia has less spangling and VERY rounded fins.. but this fish was also the runt and has been chewed up and nipped up many times.

I will try to snap some pics before I take down the set-up today.. They are now going in a 120g wide with a divider..

Hey!
Just joined. Glad to see some Paratilapia fans out there. My favorite fish.
I'm going to post some pics of my fish in the hopes that you guys will upload pics of yours. Let's see those fish:headbang2
