It is not too surprising to me. It is usual for Clarias batrachus to be territorial in a tank.

Among mine five (got them half-dead from one of our drying up seasonal ponds) two were ~6" and three were ~4"-5". -- http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=38699&hilit=+walking -- They had rebounded fine but the big ones chased one of the smaller ones (the weakest) to almost-dead the first overnight in a 55 gal biting his tail and his skin. I removed all three smaller ones into a 27 gal. The damaged one didn't live the day. Among the other two, one, slightly bigger, chased the other mercilessly and killed him eventually. After a few weeks, that one smaller survivor went back into the 55 gal with the two bigger ones. He was real strong and kept swimming away skillfully from the big guys, plus I added much more cover. So the three of them were ok for a few months, albeit the bigger ones always chased and bullied the smaller one, even at feeding. Then the smaller one started getting more damage and I let them out into a 1500 gal pond. The big ones almost never fought each other but it usually looked like they were even like a pair in love, brushing against each other with what could be construed as a caress and touching each other with barbels, etc.

I think that sex may make a difference and that the two bigger ones are females and the smaller ones were males but I cannot be sure for now. When I pull them out, I will attempt to sex them as that is relatively easy.

well from all this i learned one thing !! never put a clarias with other clarias unless they were in the same size avoiding the troubles and the other thing dpn't put anything with the paroons they are freaking predators
