I was feeding my fish the other day and put some flakes in the tank. My pike has never even looked at a flake before and since they had blood worms earlier in the day I figured today would be no different. Anyway this 1 flake was kind of caught in the current and fluttering. My Xingi I kind of circled it and WHAM! hit it like it was live food!. I was amazed I didnt think he would ever eat a flake i had to starve him damn near a week before he would take pellets.

Awesome!! I had my pikes on just any anything! Pellets, Flake, prepared, you name it! They are greedy mo fos!! It does help if you put it infront of the current or outflow. My sveni would only hit the food after it was in the current...picky bugga!!

He's eaten aro sticks before he's no where near as picky as he was when i first got him at first I thought the stubborn baststard would prefer to starve to death than eat something other than a rosie. I haven't tried flakes again but they will come up in the feeding rotation . I want to see if he does it again. I am going to purposely put it in the flow from 1of the filters. He now eats smelt, squid, pellets, food sticks, frozen or freeze dried krill bloodworms tubiflex worms and brine, frozen beefheart and fresh chicken herats, and the very occasional feeder (cuz i love the way he hunts and want him to keep his predator instincts). He and his tank mates will be getting a much bigger home in the near future. Only need a few more $$$$.

Correction:

I just noticed i spelled Xingu I incorrectly in my original post, sorry.

Vinny Kutty's C. Semifasciata was on a hungerstrike for six weeks before it started accepting pellets. Mine is the same way, but at the end pikes eat it all.

My philosphy generally is survival will set in before starvation, but he scared the crap outta me, I never had any cichlid not eat anything for that long. He's my first pike and i didnt want to loose him

Don't worry! Pikes are picky and moody but very tough. If your Xingu will refuse to eat for more than two months, then you can start worrying.

My Semifasciata male was eating only one sort of shrimps for several months, never beefheart. Now it eats beefheart and refuses shrimps. Like if I care! If he eatls less, the water stays cleaner.

   I know thats right. I guess i was scared because it was my first try with pikes. With help from people here I settled down. He's swimming around with a fat belly full of frozen smelt right now. :naughty:

it was probably pissed afterwards... lol

Oh well sucks to be him!!!

I am going to try the flakes again tomorrow and see what happens.
