Hey guys my birthday is in 2 days and i'm trying to persuad my dad to get a me a large plastic pond tub to put under my deck. It is planning to be around the size of 6 feet (length), 3.5 feet (width) and 3.5 (height). This is going to be my estimate. i live in southern ontario canada. Can my gars survive through the winter in the tub with a cover??? what procaution do i need to do first?? any problem?? Will the tub COMPLETELY freeze over?? what will I need to add then?? How many GARS CAN I PUT INSIDE?? I am planning to get a few gator gars. Will it work for life?? If not, what other species of gars or aggresive coldwater fish?? I can put the tub or fish inside during the winter. i hope next year's winter is going to be as warm as this year's. Thanks you global warming!! LOL

That pond is going to be way too small for alligator gars or any other larger species of gar. You might be able to do a couple of Florida gars, if that, and there's absolutely no guarantee that they will survive the winter even with a cover. However, if you can keep the pond a decent bit above freezing year round, then you might have a shot at making this work.

Also, where to you plan on getting a preformed pond with those dimensions? I have never come across any that length that are deeper than 18", so you'll be hard pressed to find one that is even relatively close to those dimensions. Your best bet is to make a pond using pond liner in order to achieve that depth.

I would say no to them surviving in my opinion....DEFINATELY to small for alligator gars...u maybe able to do 1 longnose and a few florida and spotted's etc...but no gator gars!

what would be 'a decient bit above freezing point?" what temp?? should I get one of those pond stirring thingy where it keeps the water flowing in the winter so it won't freeze over?? Will that work??

what is the minimum pond size length for a gator gar?

Best way to make your own- look into swimming pools, particularly smaller ones. Pre-fab plastic is an option (gar may burst), or rendered concrete.
Maybe take a PT or summer job with a pool builder or mason to learn the ropes, then get a load of brick, a load of sand/gravel and a dozen bags of concrete and get stuck-in.
Apparently a bubbler is often enough to keep the water moving and keep it from freezing, depending on temperature....

Ideally, you would keep the water at or above 50° F, if possible.

You're looking at a pretty substantial pond for an alligator gar, so I don't think that you'll be able to fit in under your deck.
