At around 10 oclock this morning the transformer outside my house blew up, we've been without power for 6 hours now. I don't know how soon it will be back up, about how long do I have until drastic measures need to be taken?

The temperature on both my aquariums is around 76, dropped from 80 this morning. I have a 75 gal with small gars, a hujeta, knifefish, oscar and a senegal, and a 15 gal community tank with various livebearers and tetras. I've already lost my pregnant swordtail in the last few hours...

What can I do? And when my power comes back on, are there any precautions I should take when getting the filters back running? I've never had this happen before, I'm really worried, please help!

Get air in the tanks asap fill a container with air and squeeze it below water level! as for the temp nothing to worry about yet worst case take out 5 gallons and add 5 gallons of warm water!

Put the media in the tank. Without flow it is going to be a huge mess when the power finally comes back on.

Well, I have a bunch of live plants so I figured that should help with the air a bit too. I'm gonna take out 5 gallons, and add 5 more, but if my power isn't on throughout the night, how often should I keep doing this?

When should I worry about the temperature?

Sorry I don't know what you mean by put the media in the tank, can you elaborate?

get a piece of garden hose or your vacuum hose and start a syphon that goes from one end of the tank to the other to cause water movement. Its tricky to do but it can work or......get some bait bubblers from walmart and a car battery to run it.It will run for a super long time before it kills the battery.or if you have a car and the tank is near the window you could get a converter from your car battery to electric and just run one filter or so but that could be expensive after a while or go get a generator and youll be able to run all kinds of stuff-still will need gas though. All of this really sucks though. Its money that you shouldn't have to spend but ya gotta do what you gotta do.Got a home depot near your house? They rent generators.in any case, good luck

So it turned out my uncle had this battery powered generator thing. I was able to keep my filter and heater running in my big aquarium. :)

Thanks for your help guys, now I know exactly what to do next time this happens.

During huricane Hugo here in Charlotte NC back in the late 80's, we had lost power for 14 days. I was in high school at the time but dad was running a 75 gallon salt water setup w/undergravel air pump filtration. He had to drive the truck up to the window and power the air pumps every so often from that I remember...lol

Check out your local petstore and pick up a few battery powered air pumps - super cheap and a headache saver for the future.
