My Pride and Joy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a group in the 90s, that came from Don Conkel.
and again around 2010.
Great fish, the males were extremely aggressive.
The 2nd time after the male killed his mate, I gave it to a friend.
He put it in a 220 gal where it killed an adult midevil, and full-grown carpintus.
That male below

yep I got mine from Conkel! I went to his ponds, his fish are amazing

this fish is awesome! What size tank do you keep him in? Any tank mates?
He is in a 125gal by himself, not that I haven't tried to keep him with others. He's just too mean. I have tried catfish, armored plecos, Spannar barbs, and five mates all killed or I had to rehome to save them.

When I tried to get him a new mate...didn't work out...

They actually have a few left
I have a journal of his growth from the day I got till current here

Very nice regani OP ?I have 2 (separated). The one nearly killed the other in a 150g so need to rehome that one. Mine are about 5-6”. Beautiful fish but a little nervous about the potential aggression.

M. regani are commonly found in swift flowing streams, .they prefer a moving wall of water, (a strong current) and if given enough, this may help temper their aggression. (very similar to their close cousin M. argentea, with similar aggression issues)
These swift flowing waters are also cool, mid to upper 70s F (25'C) and by using these temps, it may also temper aggression
They are surprisingly shy when it comes to large moving shadows, but this does not belay theira ggression with other large cichlids.
In nature they are highly vegetarian, so a high Spirulina content pellet made for plant eating fish would seem appropriate, not so heavy in meaty ingredients or protein.
If I were going to keep them again, I would rig the tank with a strong pump, that moves lots of gallons of water.

BTW, just for context, each effluent pipe exit is 1" inner diameter, and there are 4 exits ports across the width of the 180 gal tank, the pump pushed @ 1800 gallons per hour, being used on the Andinoacara tank.
