Well My little giant pump on my 125 burned up yesterday. Everythings running hunky dory and all the sudden the rooms creepy quiet. I think to myself "thats never good". and it wasnt. So Im wondering what my options are now. The pump I had ran about 500gph with the head level it has to pump too. Im thinking of scraping the sump Idea all together, selling my acrylic sump and overflow box using the money toward 2 emperor 400s. Would this be enough filtration? Current stocking is 2 firemouths, 2 severums, 2 senegal bichirs and a couple blood parrots. eventually id like to do some more aggressive cichlids like GTs and red devils, or cubans or something.

Opinions, options, Im open to anything guys.

I would get an FX5 instead. More bio ,quiter, better overall filtration.

You will however want to keep your sumps seeded material somehow.

Im really trying to keep this on a budget. I could prolly get those filters for close to what I could sell my sump and overflow for and not have to throw in alot of extra money. My preggo fiance would kill me if she found out I dropped 300 on a filter.

I would pick up another pump, sumps are probably the most effective filter you can use and if it's been working for a while why change it? Don't be cheap on the pump as this is the heart of your filter and your tank, if you go cheap now you'll end paying for it with either replacement pumps or fish deaths.

Also, as for pump choices, personally I would pick up 2 mag drives as they're relatively cheap and pretty reliable, plus two pumps will protect from complete failure. But if you're looking for a single external pump (assuming your lg is external) I would look no farther than a jap iwaki. They are expensive but their durability and reliability is unmatched, and they will outlast any other pump you buy so the investment will be a sound one. I have a 7-8 year old one that's still pumping strong and I've heard stories of them running 20+ years. Look around on the reef forums and you can find a used one for pretty cheap.

Get another pump. Sump is better bio than any other option, and depending on your setup, better mechanical as well.

How much head pressure did you have on the old pump so we can recommend a suitable replacement?
