Just picked-up this guy from Sharkaquarium, he's a little beat-up but still a looker. Figured I' share some pics and maybe ask a question. As you can see he's got 2 big chunks missing out of his dorsal fin. Will this heal or is he gonna always be this way. Thanx in advance for the info and compliments.

it will be that way forever.
The thick hard rays of the fins dont grow back. Only the softer fins.

But you should breed him. He is really intense in colors

probably stay that way unless you spur on the healing by surgically nipping at the area with tweezers. Once nipped add salt and melafix. It will get better, but not perfect.

couldn't tell you one way or the other about the dorsal but he's a gorgeous synspilum. :)

great pick up,most likely they will be that way forever, but give it good water and a varied diet it may just surprise you.

Thanx, It saddens me to think the fins won't grow back though. I am planning on breeding him like you said. Just gotta positively I.D. him/her as a male or female. Then pick-up a mate. I've got another Synspilum growing out in a 45 right now in perfect condition, but hasn't colored up yet(about 4 inches) so I don't know how it'll turn out or it's sex.

Not sure I'd want to try that worried about it getting worse. Thanx for the suggestion though I'll consider it.

Thanx I appreciate the compliment He/she was almost white when I bought him/her from Sharkaquarium I was surprised at the color after it developed within a week.

That was my original plan keeping my fingers crossed Thanx!

Had a fish with the exact same thing...its not going to grow back. Maybe yours will be different but they literally look exactly the same and in over a yr when I had the fish it did not change much at all. Awesome looking fish anyways tho so what

nice fish dude, shark has some cool stuff but unfortunately alot of it gets beat up since they keep most of their cichlids in like 20 gallons. your syns fins will probly not grow back but hes beautiful anyway

the fish posted, im sure, was bitten there when it was little too. And it wouldve grew back a long time ago. Because if bitten anytime just recently, I dont think it would be that bad because the fin bone is so hard now.

But there's a chance it can get a bit better filling up. But for sure any cut off bones wont grow back.

I also had a fish like this before. But worse
