The pair has spawned before but the fry did not survive in a community environment. In previous spawns, the fry disappeared after a few days. Even the fry I removed to a breeder net died the next day. This time, I removed the community fish away from the tank and let the parents do their job, and the fry so far are surviving. During spawning, the markings on the parents darkened, greatly accentuated the tiger stripes. Like tiger, no two fish have the same stripe pattern, so they can be used to uniquely ID the fish.

An update on the spawn. I had no luck the fry died off shortly after free swimming. I tried again in the next spawn by removing the eggs to a 10gal. 70% of the eggs are fertile, but the fry died off a few days after fully absorbing the egg yolk. The pH is around 7.5 and temperature in the upper 70s. Not sure if the fry need cooler temperature or lower pH to survive. The parents continue to spawn like clockwork.

I have had luck with ceibals in algae choked tanks.
I believe more than anything else green water, and semi microscopic animals as a constant grazing supply are needed after they first become free swimming.

as they grew the water cleared, and I would see the parents then lead the fry to sessile algae coated and detritus covered areas in 2"-3" depth.

by the end of summer I was able to pulled about 100 fry.
Letting algae grow on the sides of the glass and on surfaces would seem the best thing to do, along with lots of newly hatched artemia and/or daphnia.
