Assuming an 8'x4' footprint, probably a year, two if pushing it much IMHO.... don't want to hijack the thread but how long do you estimate I could keep 1 in a 500-600 gallon?

you could keep a redtail in a 200 or 300 gallon tank, but that dosent mean its okay, there is a huge diffrence between survive and thrive and lets be honest, we all know red tails dont belong in a tank, i think that if you wanna keep a red tail you should get it into a pond after the 18"-20" mark because after that anyother fish you try to keep it with will become food sooner or laterThat's about the footprint of the tank one of my lfs keeps their rtc in. His name is moby and they've had him 30 years...

I think he can get more than 1-2 years out of an 8'x4' footprint.
