I feel like the terror in the back of the first pic (and in the 3rd and 5th) looks like a female to me, but i've only studied these fish and never kept them myself

It said moved because it has pictures in it and was moved to the cichlid media section where pics and videos are posted. This section is used for discussion. You're new so don't feel bad for not knowing. The media section is in a little window right above this section:) nice festae by the way. And as far as the sex... A lot of us told you what we thought in your previous thread. Then you came back with, the guy you bought them from said he only received males and females are due on next shipment.... There's a small chance that the importers made a mistake and that the first pic is female, but at the size they are I doubt it. The festae in the first pic looks like a few males I used to own. Sometimes males will look like a cross dresser;) but if yours is female then it should be showing better colors at that size. Your best bet is to vent or buy a female from next shipment and then put them all together and see what happens. Good luck

That is a very confusing Festae to sex. I have to admit, with the black dorsal and lack of spangling on the body, plus with the face turning red, it's starting to look more like a female. But...it still has the body shape of a male, and it has spangling throughout the dorsal and spangling on the tail which are male traits. Even with the better pics it's still difficult to say for sure. How big is it?? Like 6"? I would think it would be more red by now if it were female but give it another month or so. It may be just starting to change because it's a lot more red now than two weeks ago.

Looks like the smaller could be a female, the black on the dorsal fin in the front twords the head is what im going by. Also the lack of spangling on the un paired fins (dorsal+anal) and the caudal fin(tail) has got me thinking its a female

Thank you all.
Now I'm in a bigger problem, because if I thought it was male, so now I'm not sure ..
If I have a female and I changed the second male to female so I get two females ..
Balton777 yes it's 6"...

Look at the colors he / she received:

You can not tell for sure even though those colors?

well with that video im gonna change my tune and say that it does look female lol so i can see why your pulling your hair out. what i meant earlier was not to swap out any fish just yet but if you had the opportunity to grab another festae and had the room then do so. if not just wait another month to let these two finish settling in before making any decisions about letting either of those go. I mean heck, you could end up with both being female, and then on the hunt for a male. I suggest having a divider handy just in case hell breaks loose. then keep a good eye on their behavior with eachother and their tankmates to help you get a better idea of their gender.

Also, how big is that tank you have them in? it doesnt look too big. and if you do end up with a pair, they wil most likely clean out the rest of your fish. but good luck and keep posting updates of them settling in so we can help give you a better judgement on their gender.

LoL sorry I can't tell what it is. I had the same problem with mine when he was young....I kept going back and forth until about six inches.

Hi everyone,
A lot of you told me that my chances to create a pair when I put two adult items together is impossible.
So it's possible.
The female in the picture was larger about 5 CM from the male, so it didn't succeed.
But, my friend was another female about 1 CM in size smaller than my male.
We decided that the difference between them is the perfect size and combined them together. 10 minutes after they entered the same tank they start demonstrated impressive mating colors.
3 weeks later, it was casting, and was a very nice amount of eggs. The male breached half of the eggs.
Of course that was hatching of about 250 fingerling.
So it's possible also to create a pair from 2 large items of Red Terror.
In my country we has only a few units (lass than 10) of this amazing fish, and now it was the first casting of him here.

Of course each good news has also bad news..
After spawning the male had a small infection (and small holes in the head). We decided to wait with the treatment in order not to harm the fry.
Unfortunately, the infection got worse and we started the treatment too late and the male died. :(
