I have two of them, and they both hide in their little caves (they are in separate aquariums). Do they need to be in a completely empty aquarium to feel safe? They are in communities, but they are by far the largest fish, and they are also dominant at feeding time. They are around 5 inches or so.

Give them some time to adjust to their new homes. I think all cichlids love rocks and hiding spaces, and mine sure do love it.

Come to think of it......my srts only come out when its feeding time, if not they're busy chasing off intruders out of there hiding spots.

I just got a Texas cichlid a few days ago and was wondering the same thing. If I just sit and watch them for a while he comes around any sudden movements seem to spook them though.

That's because you just got yours. After a week they should be fine, unless you got another dominant species in your aquarium.

i have africans, but it seems that all cichlids love making their territories out of things easy to hide in or defend. if they can fit in it and hide in it, it makes it easy to defend as a territory. just an observation. I'm not very experienced with cichlids

I tried taking out his cave I thought that might help, but it just caused him to hide more.

believe it or not every individual fish has its own personality, some are more active and some are more shy. I suggest you put his home back :)

I did it put back. Unfortunately they are both like that. I can't afford to buy too many more. Although I did buy a bunch of RT fries.
